In most American houses, the kitchen is the hub of family activity as well as the center of the home while kitchen appliances are by far the largest consumers of energy. Why not make this all important room healthy, green and eco friendly for your family and for our planet?

There are many steps you can take to make your kitchen green (or a little greener!) – whether you are undertaking a major renovation, buying new appliances, or just looking to change wasteful old habits.

Energy Star LogoIf you are purchasing new appliances, the most important thing you can do is buy a home appliance with the ENERGY STAR® logo.

Dishwashers:  an efficient, water-saving ENERGY STAR® dishwasher can reduce water and energy use to such an extent that if everyone in the U.S. who uses dishwashers owned a water-efficient model, more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion dollars would be saved each year.

Refrigerators and Freezers: these are the biggest energy consumers among major appliances so consider this possibility: by replaced an old refrigerator (one bought before 1990) with a new ENERGY STAR model, your family would save enough energy to keep your household lighted for close to four months.

Stove/ Range/Oven: if you own a gas range or oven, have it inspected annually by a trained professional to make sure your appliances receive regular maintenance and are safe and efficient.

Most important fact to remember: keep all your energy efficient appliances clean and well maintained. If any of your major household appliances break, or stop working well, diagnose the problem then buy a part and fix it. You can do this all by yourself with the help of this excellent online appliance resource.

Keep your kitchen green!
